Job Description

The Department of Physics at Virginia Tech (VT) seeks to hire a postdoctoral associate to work with Dr Chris Ashall in the area of time domain astronomy and supernovae physics.

Dr Chris Ashall is leading two proposals in JWST Cycle 1 (ID 2114 & 2122), and is Co-PI of the Precision Observation of Supernova Explosions project (the followup program to the Carnegie Supernova Project). Members of the group will have access to many international collaborations including the extended Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey of Transient Objects (ePESSTO+), and the Electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources at the Very Large Telescope (ENGRAVE). The candidate will be encouraged to pursue research within any of the above research areas, as well as to pursue their own research lines within the area of time domain astronomy. Both observers and theorists will be considered for this position.

Required Qualifications

- PhD in Physics, astronomy or a related field. PhD must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.
- Experience with UV, optical, NIR observations, or radiation transport modeling.
- Highly motivated, independent and have good communication skills.
