Job Description

A laboratory specialist position is available immediately in the Department of Biochemistry at Virginia Tech. The laboratory, headed by Dr. Brandon L Jutras, is asking fundamental questions about the biology and pathogenesis of spirochetes, specifically those responsible for Lyme disease and Syphilis. The position will involve both basic research in the areas of molecular biology and microbiology while assisting in everyday general laboratory maintenance (e.g., purchasing, inventory, record and protocol management, etc.).

A successful candidate will have experience in a research laboratory setting, and have excellent analytical and organizational skills. Preference will be awarded to individuals with training and experience in 1) experimental animal models 2) molecular biology and 3) microbial pathogenesis. Required Qualifications

Must be an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills; Some familiarity with basic (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe, etc.) and coding software packages (R, Python, MatLab, etc.) ; Excellent organizational skills; Some experience with microbiology and aseptic technique; Some experience with molecular biology: Cloning, bacterial transformation, standard molecular techniques; Some experience with laboratory animal research: Colony maintenance, infection studies; tissue processing and analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field; Experience in preparing chemical reagents, making accurate volumetric transfers, communicating clearly, and in a timely fashion. Additional preferred qualifications; Demonstrated research experience; Knowledge of maintaining a safe and clean laboratory environment.
