Job Description

The Director of Alumni Relations will serve as the chief engagement and events officer in the College of Science. This position will be primarily responsible for providing leadership and guidance for the college's engagement and stewardship efforts with alumni, donors and friends to ultimately increase constituent engagement and philanthropic support for the college. Additionally, the director will work collaboratively with colleagues in University Advancement and in the College of Science to further Virginia Tech's overall engagement and institutional advancement goals and objectives.

The director will be responsible for planning, promoting, executing, and evaluating alumni engagement programs, projects, and events for the college. In collaboration with the college's Senior Director of Communications, the director will strategize and implement targeted alumni communication efforts for the College of Science. This position will work in tandem with the members of the college's advancement team to pursue and promote the overall institutional goals related to communications, fundraising, and alumni engagement. The director must be comfortable making group presentations and have the ability to work both closely and effectively with university alumni, administrators and faculty.

This position reports to the Assistant Dean for Advancement in the College of Science.

Required Qualifications

- Master's or Bachelor's degree in marketing, hospitality, communications, or other related field

- Experience in event planning, alumni activities and/or educational programming

- Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a wide range of constituencies

Preferred Qualifications

- Significant experience in event planning particularly in higher education

- Experience in alumni relations; significant experience developing effective strategies for planning events to enhance constituent participation and philanthropic support

- Demonstrated ability to train and motivate volunteers

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment

- Knowledge of Virginia Tech and its programs desirable.

Safe Driving Record

Must have the ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.

Regional and national travel required for the purposes of conducting field research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, which may include overnights and weekends.

Ability to work nights and weekends, and participation in college or university programs as needed.
