Job Description

The Building Manager for Latham Hall is responsible for overall facility management and daily building, administrative, and fiscal operations as part of the Office of Facility Management in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). As a flagship building in the Fralin Life Sciences Institute, the Building Manager works to support the research teams occupying the building's 44 labs. For example, the building manager will work closely with an appointed, Latham-resident Principal Scientist to identify and implement strategic upgrades in Latham Hall infrastructure and operations. The facility is utilized by researchers from two colleges and six departments to solve complex problems in the areas of biodesign, bioprocessing, fisheries, wildlife, geography, forestry, infectious diseases, plant-pathogen-environment interactions, and soils. This position is the primary point-of-contact for Latham Hall occupants in regard to general building-related issues.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in applicable discipline or equivalent level of training and experience in facility management, engineering, administration, or trades. Self-motivated, responsible, able to resolve or interpret policies, read construction plans and specifications, maintain confidentiality, prioritize efforts, and work independently while performing multiple tasks. Ability to work cooperatively with laboratory staff occupying many different types of spaces, serving as a resource for managing equipment use, equipment repairs and maintenance, equipment and facilities modifications, and operations of shared spaces. Evidence of effective analytical skills including gathering facts, analyzing findings, and recommending solutions. Ability to remain current with training related to building operations, maintenance, and laboratory safety. Proficiency with basic computer software applications (e.g. Microsoft Office). Ability to develop operating budgets and manage revenue and expenses within established electronic systems. Excellent customer service orientation along with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as within a team.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in facilities management, building maintenance or construction trades, especially in a research or laboratory environment. Experience with the operation, repair, and maintenance of laboratory and building system equipment. Knowledge of university, state, and federal policies and regulations related to biological laboratory research operations and management. Certification in plumbing, electrical, or refrigeration. Higher education experience. Previous experience with Banner, HokieMart and other university computer-based systems.
