Job Description

The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine offers a 54-week rotating equine internship program starting June 2024. The program will be divided equally between Equine Field Service, Large Animal Medicine, and Large Animal Surgery. The program is designed to provide the intern with the training and experience to compete for high quality positions in private practice or advanced training programs.
The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine is located in Blacksburg, Virginia. The Equine Field Service unit serves a 35-mile radius surrounding Blacksburg providing primary care to horses on-farm and in-hospital. Each year approximately 4000 horses are examined. The field service has four fully equipped ambulatory vehicles and provides routine and comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services including digital radiography, ultrasonography, endoscopy, and shockwave therapy. Equine Field Service performs preventative health care, reproductive services, performance horse evaluations, acupuncture/chiropractic, neurologic exams and sick horse care. The caseload is varied and includes horses used for hunting, eventing, jumping, show, trail, pleasure, dressage and breeding. Equine Field Service faculty include individuals board-certified by ACVIM, ABVP and ACVSMR.
The Large Animal Medicine and Surgery services provide specialty primary and referral, in- and out-patient, elective and emergency veterinary care for large animals (90% equine, 10% pet farm animal species/camelids) from a large referral basis in- hospital. Each year approximately 800 animals are examined. The veterinary teaching hospital provides advanced diagnostic options for in- and out-patient cases including digital radiography, ultrasonography, endoscopy/arthroscopy, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The Large Animal Medicine service includes three faculty members board-certified by the ACVIM. The Large Animal Surgery service includes four faculty members board-certified by the ACVS. Support services include clinicians board-certified in radiology, anesthesia, clinical and anatomic pathology, clinical pharmacology, ophthalmology, cardiology, neurology, and dermatology.
The intern will be part of a team consisting of faculty clinicians, large animal residents and clinical year students. The intern will be actively involved in the management of patients presented to the respective services, and participate in the instruction and evaluation of veterinary students, in daily rounds, case conferences, and journal club. Participation in emergency duty is expected.
A certificate of internship is awarded for satisfactory completion of the program.

Required Qualifications

This position requires a DVM or equivalent degree. Candidates must be eligible for a Virginia faculty veterinary license and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
