Reporting to the assistant director of finance, the program financial specialist will provide financial services and administrative support for the Continuing and Professional Education department as well as the Commonwealth Campus Centers (CCC), the Language and Culture Institute (LCI), the Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement (COTA) and the Executive Briefing Center.

The program financial specialist will work independently to monitor, analyze, reconcile, and report on assigned program and Executive Briefing Center (EBC) funds in addition to serving as the departmental resource for payroll processes. The position will approve HokieMart and journal transfers, review financial statements prepared by the other program accountants, and provide backup for the review of program budgets as well as establish program and surplus funds in Banner.

Program accounting duties include ensuring compliance of established university and state procedures, verification of the accuracy of revenues and expenditures, projections, and the preparation of billings and financial reports.

As the departmental specialist for payroll related duties, responsibilities include the setup, monitoring, and payment of wage personnel as well as program related faculty payments, labor redistributions and other general payroll functions. General knowledge of payroll rules is expected as well as the ability to research complex issues. This role will serve as a departmental liaison to the Human Resources and Payroll departments.

The person in this position is expected to maintain a thorough knowledge of both internal CPE and university systems (including Banner, HokieMart, Chrome River, MicroStrategy and TimeClock).

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree or equivalent training in accounting, finance, or business
* Experience applying professional principles and standards
* Experience researching, investigating, analyzing, reconciling, and evaluating data
* Experience in accounting functions or principles, general business practices, collection procedures, and/or applicable computer system
* Experience interacting with internal and external customers using both verbal and written communication skills to discuss financial processes or issues
* Experience applying, interpreting, or assessing university and state policies, procedures, laws, and regulations to departmental financial transactions
* Experience resolving routine issues, and making independent and logical decisions and/or recommendations
* Experience working in high-volume, fast-paced, team environment

Preferred Qualifications

* Demonstrated familiarity with state and federal laws, rules, and regulations
* Experience with HokieMart, TimeClock and/or Banner or similar software
* Experience in payroll processes / operations
* Experience with leading projects or teams
