Job Description

The Assistant Director reports to an Associate Director and supports the integration, facilitation, and coordination of outcome driven efforts at Virginia Tech that support student success (e.g., retention, persistence and graduation). This position works closely with colleagues in Academic Advising Initiatives, Undergraduate Academic Affairs, each of the academic colleges, and the campus community to accomplish comprehensive student engagement and completion goals. The Assistant Director will provide leadership and coordination for university-wide programs and initiatives related to enhancing academic advising. This position will serve as the point of contact for assessment of undergraduate academic advising and provide professional reports to stakeholders outlining assessment results and strategize appropriate interventions to meet university benchmarks.

Specific duties include:
Supporting transitional advising services through individual meetings with students to include career and major exploration, and academic planning assistance.
Supporting prospective transfer students through Hokie Corner appointments with admission to provide academic advice prior to application.
Coordination of assessment efforts for all Academic Advising Initiative programs.
Leadership of Advising Assessment Leadership Group to promote the use of assessment in advising which has representation from all undergraduate colleges
Provide professional reports to campus stakeholders
Teach a transitional course
Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in an academic discipline which would support the advising function.
Demonstrated experience in leading change.
Progressively responsible work experience in building advising and/or student success programs.
Knowledge and demonstrated ability to apply student development theory and practices to foster student learning.
Knowledge of higher education delivery systems and student retention strategies.
Basic computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to effectively relate to students of diverse ages and backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of, or experience in a large, public, research intensive institution.
Demonstrated ability to use predictive analytics, degree audit, and retention planning tools to build strategic responses in academic advising.
Experience partnering with academic faculty with curricular development.
Teaching experience in a college setting.
Knowledge of assessment strategies appropriate to academic advising to include knowledge of QuestionPro and SPSS data analysis software.
