Your Job

The Electrical Project Manager is responsible for capital project development and execution, facility electrical infrastructure, and technical support for maintenance on electrical issues. This position reports to Project Engineering Group Leader and is part of a team of 5 engineers across various disciplines including mechanical, electrical, and civil. Travel requirements are minimal (1 to 3 times per year). If more travel is desired, there are opportunities to do so.


Our Team

The Big Island Paper Mill

The mill produces the paper used to make boxes. Half of the production is made from 100% recycle fiber and the other half uses about 25% recycle fiber. In 2015, a $50 million upgrade enabled the production of a higher return product. The mill employs about 330 people; about 90 are salaried, of which many are degreed engineers. The engineering department consists of Project (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical), Process (Paper Science/Chem E), and Process Controls (Electrical, IT, & Chem E) engineers.

About the Big Island Living Area

Mill employees live in many of the surrounding areas including Lynchburg, Bedford, Amherst County, and Big Island. The Blue Ridge Mountains, James River, and Smith Mountain Lake provide some of the best outdoor recreation in the U.S. You can drive to the Virginia and North Carolina coasts within 5 hours. There are three airports within a one-hour drive. Area schools are excellent. Two ACC schools, UVA, and Va. Tech are within 2-hour's drive. Lynchburg is home to Liberty U., U. of Lynchburg, and Randolph College.


What You Will Do

Project Management

  • Provide constructability input into the engineering design.
  • Review all electrical design documentation and provide input on any errors or deficiencies.
  • Provide input on electrical project schedules.
  • Be a safety advocate for all project phases and participate in risk identification and mitigation-planning activities.
  • Help manage electrical construction activity.
  • Advise on and track field changes and associated costs on electrical construction packages.
  • Ensure all changes are properly reviewed and advanced through document control.
  • Coordinate construction activities with Construction Manager and Mill Operations.
  • Ensure Electrical construction schedule is adequately maintained and coordinated with overall project schedule.
  • Support all CPWP (Capital Project Work Process) activities including VIP (Value Improvement Process),
  • For new equipment, support efforts around EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) reviews, lessons learned, and asset care strategies.
  • Ensure all applicable electrical code requirements are followed during construction.
  • Ensure that the electrical scope on projects being managed by peers in the project group has the appropriate third-party electrical engineering support.
  • Facilitate project kick-off meetings, review meetings, and establish agendas.
  • Help develop project estimates and manage project control budgets.


Facility Power Distribution Strategic & Tactical Support

  • Lead the mill's long-term power distribution infrastructure multi-year plan for replacing end-of-life equipment and establish and maintain electrical and power systems records
  • Manage facility power study once every 5th year. This study identifies opportunities to reduce risks involving arc flash, load flow, and relay coordination.
  • Technical Support: assist maintenance in resolving power distribution issues. This could involve reviewing drawings to analyze issues such as ground faults, relay failures or settings.
  • Work with operations, maintenance, and contractors on electrical reliability improvement plans, activities, and outages.

Soft Skills

  • Decision maker: Strategic thinking to guide teams through challenges.
  • Solid interpersonal skills, especially team meeting facilitation.
  • Solid writing skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word. Able to use Excel, Power Point, Teams, and Project.


Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Five (5) years or more of industrial or engineering experience in power distribution.


What Will Put You Ahead

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in electrical engineering
  • Capital project management or construction experience.
  • Experience in the paper, chemical, or petroleum industries
  • Experience leading construction efforts on projects.
  • Experience helping develop project estimates and schedules and helping track them during engineering design and construction.
  • Certification in Project Management (PMP) or Construction Management (CCM).
  • Knowledge of engineering documents associated with electrical systems (one lines, panel schedules, schematics, and wiring diagrams).
  • Knowledge of equipment protection systems (motors, feeders, and transformers) and how they work together.
  • Knowledge of electrical standards (NEC code and NFPA 70E).
