Provides psychosocial and development based assessments and support to children of all ages and their families. Plans and provides emotionally and developmentally appropriate experiences to promote effective coping with health care and continued cognitive and emotional growth for infants, children, and adolescents.

• Promotes Carilion Clinic's Culture of Excellence and quality service through team work, respectful communication, maintenance of a professional environment, partnership with those we serve, and anticipation of patient/customer needs.
• Assesses child/family psychosocial and developmental strengths and risks, and involves them in appropriate activities. Plans and implements a variety of daily recreational activities both at bedside and in the playroom spaces.
• Plans and provides coverage for special events and activities sponsored/assisted by the Child Life department.
• Actively participates in maintaining a safe and supportive environment for children and families.
• Accountable for budgetary aspects of programming which includes ordering supplies.
• Supervises volunteers and assists in handling in-kind donations.
• Responsible for documenting and communicating with the designated child life specialist about patient needs.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required. Associates degree preferred in child development or two years of college with coursework in child development or related field.

Experience: Previous experience working with children in the hospital environment preferred. 1 year teaching or work experience with children in a group setting preferred.

Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required within 6 months hire.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Must have knowledge of child development and appropriate activities for age groups. Must be able to provide a therapeutic and safe environment for individuals and groups, ages 0-18. Demonstrates the ability to assist patients in coping with the stress of hospitalization by matching developmental assessment of the individual with normalizing activities appropriate for their developmental age. Exhibits and delivers strong customer service skills with patients, families, volunteers and health care team. Must have excellent communication skills, effective time and resource management, flexibility, the ability to learn and utilize computer applications and organizational skills.
