Job Description

The Safety, Health and Environmental Technician is responsible for performing hands-on tasks associated with the ways the plant impacts the surrounding environment including waste handling and security of the plant buildings and grounds in order to provide a safe, clean and secure work place for all employees. This position is also responsible for performing duties associated with dispensing of safety equipment and working in a safe, responsible manner by following all safety rules and procedures and applicable laws and regulations.

The employee's primary duty must be the performance of office or non-manual work directly related to the management or general business operations of Helena or Helena's customers. This also includes the exercise of discretion and independent judgement with respect to matters of significance.

What your day may look like

  • Checks and inspects the plant equipment, buildings and grounds on a regular basis including inspection of fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, safety showers and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBAs) on a monthly basis.
  • Monitors and inspects all environmental monitoring equipment.
  • Performs environmental (air, water, noise) sampling / monitoring.
  • Ensures that all contract staff members involved with waste disposal are in compliance with all safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinates the movement and shipping of waste inventory.
  • Schedules shipments for waste disposal, including proper labeling of waste inventory for plant warehousing, shipping or disposal.
  • Completes required paperwork for the accounting team to bill customers for waste disposal fees.
  • Verifies waste disposal vendor invoices and forwards to them to leadership for approval.
  • Tracks waste materials so that shipments can be bundled together for cost efficiencies.
  • Reports waste trends to senior leadership.
  • Conducts light maintenance, repairs and or replacements as needed.
  • Completes and understands hazardous waste training for purpose of independent handling of waste disposal that is in compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains and updates SHE policies and procedures.
  • Assists in conducting SHE training for plant team members.
  • Audits facility safety and environmental practices and performance to identify any deficiencies.
  • Ensures all employees are safe and in compliance with all applicable regulations. Communicates audit findings to facility leadership.
  • Completes requisitions for purchases of safety, housekeeping or waste supply items in Oracle.
  • Trains new or assigned team members in housekeeping, security and waste policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a clean work environment both inside and outside the facility by using good housekeeping habits.
  • Other work-related duties as assigned by leader.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Education and experience needed for this position

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Two years of experience in a manufacturing environment is required or two years of experience in an environmental and safety position with knowledge of chemical waste disposal.

Other skills that will help you succeed

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and knowledge of Oracle is preferred.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Ability to pass an OSHA respirator physical.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time in extreme hot or cold temperatures.
  • Available to work a rotating shifts.

Your work environment and the physical aspects of the job

There are potential hazards associated with any chemical manufacturing business but at Helena Industries safety is our highest priority. We seek out extensive safety measures including engineered solutions and personal protective equipment and put them in place to minimize exposure to anything that could potentially be harmful to our employees.

The work environment for this position is that of a typical plant environment where the noise level is usually moderate to loud. In this position, you will regularly work near moving equipment/mechanical parts and could be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, chemical and biological hazards, vibrations and a risk of electrical shock. This position requires you to use your hands for many different tasks and to talk, hear, walk, stand and sit. You may be occasionally required to lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Lab and office positions at the plant would only have occasional exposure if they must go out into the plant.
